Pupils inside the Early Christian Basilica / Workshop of Pheidias
“Saving Monuments”, 25 September 2026.

On Friday 25 September 2026, ten final-year pupils from Ancient Olympia Lower Secondary School visited the Workshop of Pheidias / Early Christian Basilica as part of “Saving Monuments”, an educational activity organised by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia for European Heritage Days.

Under the theme “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine”, the activity focused on the recently completed project “Restoration and Conservation of the Early Christian Basilica (Workshop of Pheidias)”. The pupils were introduced on site to the monument and the interventions undertaken to protect and restore it.

Seeing the restored monument at close quarters offered an opportunity to understand the work of the Archaeological Service and the care required to safeguard cultural heritage. The visit connected learning about the past with the shared responsibility of preserving its material remains for future generations.

The activity was coordinated by Tonia Mourtzini and Angelos Gkotsinas.
