century.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-start-index=\"638\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"638\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"638\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In <\/span><\/span><\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"724\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">1905 <\/span><\/span><\/b><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-start-index=\"638\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"paragraph heading4 ng-star-inserted\" role=\"heading\" data-start-index=\"941\" aria-level=\"4\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"941\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Landmark of 2004: Temple of Zeus, Philippeion<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div><div role=\"heading\" data-start-index=\"941\" aria-level=\"4\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1005\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1005\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">On the occasion of the return of the Olympic Games to their homeland, the archaeological site entered a phase of radical modernization.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-start-index=\"1005\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1005\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1005\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Emblematic enhancement projects were implemented by<\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dainst.org\/en\/dai-standorte\/athens\"><b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">German Archaeological Institute<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/a><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , and with the support of the <\/span><\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leventisfoundation.org\/heritage-conservation\/second-phase-of-the-restoration-temple-of-zeus-olympia?rq=Olympia\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A. G. Leventis Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> at the Temple of Zeus for the restoration of the western apse, <\/span><\/span><b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">restoring an entire column.<\/span><\/span><\/b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> The aim of the interventions was to improve visitors&#8217; understanding of the scale and three-dimensional form of the temple.<\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1005\"><p><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A second phase, completed in 2012, focused on the <\/span><\/span><b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">comprehensive presentation of the area of \u200b\u200bthe opisthodomos of the Temple of Zeus<\/span><\/span><\/b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> .\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Philippeion<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The restoration <\/span><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1231\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">of part of the floor (<strong>krepis<\/strong>) and some columns<\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ancientolympiamuseum.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/04\/the-philippeion\/\">Philippeion<\/a> was completed in <\/span><\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">2005<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> also by the <\/span><\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">German Archaeological Institute<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> . The restoration, during which architectural members of the monument repatriated from Berlin were used, was made possible by the generous sponsorship, also in this case of the <\/span><\/span><b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">&#8220;A. G. Leventis&#8221; Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> .<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1358\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The monument of the Ptolemies<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p><\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1005\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1231\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">At the same time, in <\/span><\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\" inherit;\">Ptolemaic honorary votive offering<\/span><\/span><\/b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , one of the most magnificent of its kind in the sanctuary, in front of the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ancientolympiamuseum.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/22\/the-echo-hall\/\"><b><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Stoa of Echo<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/a><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span dir=\"auto\" style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , was completed .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><div data-start-index=\"1005\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1450\">The project was implemented by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ilia-olympia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia<\/a> and aimed to make the monument accessible to the public and to extend the time visitors spend in the area.<\/div><\/div><div data-start-index=\"1450\"><p dir=\"ltr\">The restoration work, which was completed at the end of 2025, included two main sub-projects:<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\u2022 Restoration and Enhancement: It included excavation cleaning, structural reinforcement of the existing walls (mainly the hot bath\/caldarium), foundation reinforcement and the repositioning of displaced architectural members.
