Unlike gymnastic events, horse and chariot races provided a platform for the display of wealth and power by those able to maintain expensive stables and teams, making a victory there highly visible data-start-index=\"765\">east of the sacred Altis<\/b><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"789\"> and south of the Stadium<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"814\">. <\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"814\">Its precise location is referenced by ancient traveler Pausanias, who noted that the sanctuary of <\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"914\">Demeter Chamyne<\/b><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"929\"> stood to the north of the track<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"961\">. <\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"961\">Today, the monument is not visible because much of it was buried or washed away over centuries by the repeated <\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"1074\">flooding of the Alpheios River<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5aca01 class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>The Hippodrome was a vast, flat area about <strong>780 meters<\/strong> long and <strong>320 meters<\/strong> wide.<\/li>\n<li>The competition area had an elongated, narrow shape. Along its length was the so-called &#8220;<strong>emvolon,<\/strong>&#8221; a stone or wooden partition two stadia long that&nbsp;divided it into two parallel corridors.<\/li>\n<li>The horses or chariots all ran in the same corridor, initially <strong>heading east<\/strong> and returning from the other corridor, <strong>heading west.<\/strong> The total distance they covered varied depending on the competition.<\/li>\n<li>Around the track there was space for <b>spectators<\/b>. In the northern part, the natural slope of the ground was utilized, while on the other sides, <b>artificially inclined levels<\/b> were created with earth filling.<\/li>\n<li>At the western end of the northern slope there was a special, <b>separate position for the judges<\/b> of the competitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-start-index=\"3736\" aria-level=\"4\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"paragraph normal ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"3755\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"3755\">Ancient authorities intentionally kept this large area <\/span><b class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"3810\">free of permanent buildings<\/b><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"3837\"> to allow for the formation of horse teams and chariots at the start of races<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\" data-start-index=\"3914\">.
