The so-called Baths of Leonidaion are located outside the southwest corner of the sacred precinct of Altes. They owe their name to the nearby Leonidaion (the guesthouse for distinguished officials), although the two buildings were not functionally related in antiquity. \n\nThe bath complex was constructed in the 3rd century AD and remained in use until the 6th century, undergoing several structural modifications during its long history.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

It is one of the most remarkable monuments in Olympia, which stands out as the only building in the area that retains its original height and its roof <\/span><\/span>almost intact<\/span><\/span><\/strong> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The complex consists of <\/span><\/span>four small rooms with vaulted ceilings<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and features beautiful <\/span><\/span>mosaic floors<\/span><\/span><\/strong> that remain visible to this day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The baths were part of a large building complex, now mostly ruined, located north of the baths and west of the Leonidaion, which also included a guesthouse.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>The baths occupied the south wing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The masonry of the building includes techniques such as <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>opus testaceum <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i>and the use of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>reused material (spolia) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>, while the construction work is characterized as particularly meticulous in comparison to other baths in the area.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The thermae had sophisticated infrastructure for their time, including a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>complex hydraulic system<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b> and a sophisticated heating system. In Late Antiquity, the function of the building changed significantly, reflecting the evolution of the settlement that developed on the ruins of the sanctuary.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

During the 5th century AD, a section of the baths was converted into <\/span><\/span>a wine <\/span><\/span>press<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/strong> for wine production<\/span><\/span><\/span> , while another room housed a <\/span><\/span>glassmaking workshop<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, as evidenced by the discovery of a kiln.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The Baths of Leonidaion were built in the <\/span><\/span>3rd century AD<\/span><\/span><\/b> . They were part of a large building complex, which is now mostly destroyed, and was located north of the baths and west of Leonidaion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

They were designed to provide <\/span><\/span>modern Roman comforts<\/span><\/span><\/b> to distinguished guests and visitors to the sanctuary.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The complex represents the <\/span><\/span>monumental transformation<\/span><\/span><\/b> of the area during the Roman Imperial period.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Despite the renovations, the baths respected the <\/span><\/span>layout and orientation<\/span><\/span><\/b> of the older building.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/details>
