The <\/span>Workshop of Pheidias<\/b> is one of the most significant monuments at Olympia, directly linked to the creation of the <\/span>chryselephantine statue of Zeus<\/b>, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The building is strategically located <\/span>west of the sacred Altis enclosure<\/b>, directly opposite the magnificent Temple of Zeus<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The officials of Elis<\/b><\/a>, responsible for the Olympian sanctuary, invited the renowned sculptor to Olympia to create a statue worthy of the recently completed temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Its position, immediately north of the Theokoleon (the priests’ residence), suggests close cooperation between the religious administrators and the staff for the continuous care of the precious cult statue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Constructed of shell-limestone, this three-aisled structure served as the workshop where Pheidias meticulously crafted the chryselephantine statue of Zeus.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Using a wooden core revetted with gold, ivory, glass, and semi-precious stones, the sculptor and his craftsmen prepared the masterpiece in sections, supported by specialized tools and clay matrices found on-site\u2014including a personal pitcher inscribed “I belong to Pheidias.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once completed, the monumental figure was transported and assembled within the Temple of Zeus, depicting the deity enthroned in gold and ivory, his robes intricately adorned with glass floral motifs.<\/p>\n

The Architecture of Creation<\/b><\/div>\n

The construction of the building dates to the middle of the <\/span>5th century B.C.<\/b> (around 430 B.C.)<\/span>. One of its most striking features is that its interior dimensions (approximately <\/span>15 x 32 meters<\/b>) correspond almost exactly to those of the <\/span>cella of the Temple of Zeus<\/b>. <\/span><\/div>\n

This architectural choice allowed Pheidias to craft the colossal statue, which stood over 13 meters high, at the precise scale of the space where it would finally be installed<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n
