the heart of the sanctuary was the great gold-and-ivory statue of Zeus, created by the master sculptor <b>Phidias<\/b> around <b>435 BC<\/b>, shortly after the temple&#8217;s completion.<\/p><p>This colossal <b>chryselephantine statue\u00a0<\/b>\u2014meaning it was constructed with gold and ivory plates over a wooden framework\u2014 represented the pinnacle of ancient Greek sculptural achievement.\u00a0<\/p><p>Nearly <b>twelve metres high<\/b>, the seated figure of Zeus held in his right hand the goddess of <b>Victory<\/b>, Nike, and in his left a <b>sceptre topped with an eagle<\/b>, all while mounted on an elaborate throne decorated with precious materials, mythological scenes, and intricate carvings.<\/p><p>Phidias and his craftsmen worked with <b>gold, ivory, glass, and semi-precious stones<\/b> in the adjacent south wing. Remarkable finds from excavations include <b>clay matrices<\/b> for the statue&#8217;s drapery, ivory fragments, goldsmith&#8217;s tools, and <b>a small cup<\/b> inscribed &#8220;<i>I belong to Phidias.<\/i>&#8220;<\/p><p>After its completion, the statue was dismantled and transported in parts inside the temple. It was then reassembled and erected in its final position, at <strong>the back of the cella<\/strong>, where it remained for many centuries..\u00a0<\/p><p>Ancient writers described visitors being moved to tears by the statue&#8217;s sublime beauty and majesty\u2014the geographer <b>Strabo <\/b>wrote that if Zeus were to stand, he would break through the temple&#8217;s roof.<\/p><p>The statue required <b>constant maintenance<\/b>; records mention workers who regularly polished and oiled the ivory to prevent cracking in Olympia&#8217;s humid climate. A rectangular <b>pool of olive oil <\/b>was kept in front of the statue to provide moisture and create shimmering reflections.<\/p><p>The statue&#8217;s presence turned the temple into much more than a building\u2014it became <b>a symbol of divine majesty, human artistry, and the very spirit of style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">The officials of <a href=\"https:\/\/elismuseum.com\/ancient-elis-the-cradle-of-the-olympic-games-2\/\"><b>Elis<\/b><\/a>, responsible for the Olympian sanctuary, invited the renowned sculptor to Olympia to create a statue worthy of the recently completed temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Built between <b>430-420 BC<\/b>, the rectangular hall (32 x 18 x 14.50m) matched the exact dimensions of the temple&#8217;s cella to facilitate construction of the colossal statue.<\/span><\/p><p>The workshop was divided into <b>three naves by columns<\/b>, with the statue likely positioned
