Educational programs in Olympia
Ancient Olympia, as one of the most important cultural destinations in the world, is a living cell of education. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Elis, responsible for the operation of the Archaeological Site and the Museums of Olympia, implements a series of educational activities, offering students of all levels the opportunity to approach antiquity through experiential learning and play.

"Children at Play" (Ta Paidia Paizei)

A central role in these activities is held by the program “Children at Play” (Ta Paidia Paizei), which transports young visitors to the daily lives of their peers in Ancient Greece. Through the use of “museum-kits,” students discover ancient toys (athyrmata), such as spinning tops, hoops, and dolls, while discovering with surprise the timelessness of games like hide-and-seek and blind man’s buff. The action combines a tour of the Museum with play in its garden, while incorporating modern digital applications that capture children’s interest.

Offerings to Zeus of Olympia

Τhe program “Offerings to Zeus of Olympia” focuses on the Museum’s Bronze Collection.

The participants are learning about the objects that ordinary people and glorious generals offered to the god Zeus from 1050 BC to 480 BC.

By observing figurines, tripods, and military equipment, the participants understand Olympia’s role as a leading cult center and oracle, while connecting ancient offerings with modern-day “tamata” (votive offerings).
