Restoration and enhancement projects
The archaeological site of Olympia, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1989, is a global symbol of the sporting ideal. The archaeological site and the surrounding area are constantly being transformed through extensive restoration and infrastructure upgrade programs. The goal is to protect the monuments and provide high-quality services to visitors in the 21st century.

Phases of Modern Restorations (1905 – 2004)

The First Interventions: Temple of Hera (Heraion)
 
The first systematic restoration work began at the beginning of the 20th century.
 
In 1905 , under the supervision of Wilhelm Dörpfeld, the restoration of two columns in the Temple of Hera was carried out .
 
This effort continued in the 1960s with further restorations of columns in the Heraion and the Palaestra .
 
The Landmark of 2004: Temple of Zeus, Philippeion 
 
On the occasion of the return of the Olympic Games to their homeland, the archaeological site entered a phase of radical modernization.
 
Emblematic enhancement projects were implemented by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute , and with the support of the A. G. Leventis Foundation at the Temple of Zeus for the restoration of the western apse, restoring an entire column. The aim of the interventions was to improve visitors’ understanding of the scale and three-dimensional form of the temple.

A second phase, completed in 2012, focused on the comprehensive presentation of the area of ​​the opisthodomos of the Temple of Zeus

Philippeion

The restoration of part of the floor (krepis) and some columns of the Philippeion was completed in 2005 also by the German Archaeological Institute . The restoration, during which architectural members of the monument repatriated from Berlin were used, was made possible by the generous sponsorship, also in this case of the “A. G. Leventis” Foundation .

The monument of the Ptolemies

At the same time, in 2017 , the restoration of the northern column of the Ptolemaic honorary votive offering , one of the most magnificent of its kind in the sanctuary, in front of the Stoa of Echo , was completed .
 
This project resulted from the excellent collaboration of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) of Athens with the competent Services of the Ministry of Culture, following the generous sponsorship of the Regula Pestalozzi Foundation . 

Current Monument Enhancement Projects (2020 – Present)

The restoration, maintenance and enhancement projects of monuments of the Roman period and late antiquity at the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia are part of a broader intervention program totaling approximately 8,300,000 euros, with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund (Greece 2.0 / NextGenerationEU) and implemented by the Ministry of Culture through the competent Directorates and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Elis .

The common goal of all interventions is to preserve the authenticity of the monuments, address serious structural problems, improve the legibility of the remains and substantially upgrade the visitor experience.
